Scratches of time
Erik Steffen alvaer – recent works
Lecture around his last exhibition in Bergen, Norway
By Mayra Elena Henriques – art historian / conveys and member of the Norwegian cultural council
Erik Steffen Alvaer`s recent production of art. A portfolio that has been materialized during the last year, but with significant marks of long time`s planning.
In Alvaer`s production there has been some changes both in materials and technique. In his production in the late 80- and 90- the pastel chalk and acrylic were the dominating techniques. Comparing with oil, pastel chalk and acrylic open up for more spontanic and rapidly work style. This way to work contributed to catch and freeze quick and rapid moments from the intimate and private sphere, first and foremost woman. Later on the expression transformed into a rawer and wild set of motifs: wolf-looking figures, horses and woman with claws...
Alvaer has been characterized as an expressionistic painter who manages to express thoughts, meanings and subjectivity at the same time as he paradox ally manage to capture the reality manifested around him.
What can we discover today in this exhibition?
Alvaers artistry is experimental. With this categorisation I mean to say his art is never satisfied, quit contrary, it`s an art which seeks relations, confrontations and plays of games. This manifests itself clearly in the development taken place in the pieces of arts` materials, technique and form.
We find a pluralistic expression; an expression which mix well known and established preferences from the weste art history ( Like manet`s ”Olympia” and Picasso`s cubistic woman, mixed with Chinese oaments, animal like figures, other ”ready mades" and Chinese popular culture.
The method Alvaer uses has been more complex and diverse. Here it is used collage with the ordinary "clip and glue technique” and computer manipulation. New works are mixed with copies of earlier made works of print, and pastel chalk, ink and tagging are mixed together. At the same time some of the works motifs are surrounded by contours witch emphasize their importance as we can observe it in more spontaneous graffiti and street art.
In addiction we find text, both computer and hand written text. Some of the text manifest itself in short comments and statements written into speech bubbles which are implemented into the works themselves but also outside the protective glass of the picture. We also find poems written by the artist himself.
The works of art remind about the post-modeistic expression:”anything goes”. Here borrows, mixes and recreates many preferences and methods without consideration to other laws and established rules than the rules Alvaer need himself to give birth for what he wants to communicate.
His stays in China and the city of Nanning inspired Alvaer. It gave freedom and opened up for experimentation in his production. It exist an experimental, tentatively and pragmatic practice in his art. It is as if the works want to solve a problem; to discover something amongst all the layers of pictures and text. All the pictures bear the signs of chaos, spontaneity and disorder, but this is only apparently. All the pictures bear a logic, an inteal logic within each frame but also within the showroom. In this showroom we see a group of thoughtful pictures. I say a group and not many individual images. Each image is like chapter in a book. They complement each other and together they make a story.
We can read conflicts, opposites, dreams, humor and irony. - something happens in the pictures. It creates a mood and a variety of situations.
The comments contained in speech bubbles are so volative that the speech itself. They can be washed away without problem and new text and “chapters” can be rewritten and be added.
Text and the images together tell something about the thoughts volatility and about time and changes in general. The animal figures ( wolf or dog, pig, cat, bird are the “original form” that stands in contrast to the volative text they are solid evidence that run through all the pictures and somehow also creates a text, a more confident and basic text.
All the different elements and motifs in the works of art ceases to be Easte and Weste elements and become part of a frame of reference, a storage Alvaer can use again and again. Here takes place (post) production of old and new items of originals, and this is something only those who are on the fringe, the one that is both inside and outside can do.
Time and time slots are present here and more “Scratches of time” will hopefully come.
